Latvia body transport permission: the Health Inspectorate
Editorial team, Repatriation.by ·

If you are arranging transport of a deceased relative out of Latvia, an instruction such as “get sanitary clearance” is too vague to act on confidently. Ask which institution and which service are meant. The Latvian Health Inspectorate, Veselības inspekcija, publishes a dedicated service covering permission to take a deceased person's body out of Latvia.
Use the current official service page
The Health Inspectorate page, updated on 17 September 2026, lists an application, a medical institution's statement concerning the cause of death, a copy of the death certificate and a funeral provider's statement concerning the coffin. This is a summary of that published Latvian service, not a complete list of everything required for entry into Belarus or acceptance by a transport operator. Follow the official page and competent instructions for the actual application.
Give each participant a clear task
For practical coordination, ask who prepares the application, who obtains each supporting record and who receives the result. A family member may hear from the hospital, a funeral director and an international coordinator in parallel. One shared status list makes it easier to see whether a paper is missing or whether the same request is being made twice.
- Record the exact name of the service being requested.
- Identify the applicant or representative agreed with the institution.
- Distinguish a submitted application from a permission already issued.
- List any request for additional information without paraphrasing away its meaning.
- Keep transport acceptance and the final handover as separate confirmations.
Do not confuse permission with departure
An issued local document does not tell a relative that the vehicle has left or that a cargo booking has been accepted. Ask what remains before dispatch: release, packaging checks, the current route, destination confirmation or another specific action. A statement that “Latvian documents are ready” should identify the documents and the next milestone.
Share records deliberately
Medical and identity records should go only to an agreed recipient through an agreed channel. Begin an enquiry with the town, institution, destination and status. If a document title is unfamiliar, retain the Latvian wording and ask for an explanation rather than making your own replacement certificate. This article does not provide medical declarations or instructions for preparing a body.
When to discuss the Latvia–Belarus arrangement
Once the local status is clear, the service discussion can address collection, the accepted route, cost boundaries and who receives the deceased. If any detail is still unknown, state it openly. You do not need to turn an incomplete application into a guessed departure date. The next useful result is a case-specific plan, not a promise based on an old travel-time estimate.
