Repatriation from Minsk to Cairo: documents, transit, Islamic traditions

Egypt has active ties with Belarus through tourism, education and trade. We are approached by families of Egyptian students at medical universities in Minsk, Vitebsk, Gomel and Grodno; Egyptian businessmen and tourism workers residing in Belarus; and mixed Belarusian-Egyptian families. The distinctive feature of Muslim funerals is the requirement of burial within 24 hours after death per sharia (janazah), making processing speed a key factor. Repatriation from Minsk to Cairo is a regular route. We deliver the body from Minsk-2 airport (MSQ) to Cairo International Airport (CAI) with maximum speed and coordination with imams and relatives.

Documents in Belarus: medical death certificate from the State Committee of Forensic Examinations, ZAGS certificate, sanitary-epidemiological service export permit, embalming act, zinc coffin sealing certificate. All documents are apostilled at the Belarus MFA. Egypt is not a Hague Convention member, so consular legalization is required through the Egyptian Embassy in Moscow or Minsk (Arab Republic of Egypt embassy operates in Minsk on Kuybyshev Street). Translations into Arabic and English — by a sworn translator. Muslim funerals require a certificate from the imam of the deceased's faith and a letter from the Egyptian family indicating the janazah location.

Logistics from MSQ to Cairo (CAI) is built through Middle East hubs. EgyptAir has direct flights from Moscow, reached by Belavia; total 6–10 hours. Turkish Airlines from MSQ via Istanbul (IST) to CAI — 8–12 hours, several daily flights. Emirates via Dubai (DXB) to CAI — 14–18 hours. Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH) to CAI — 14–16 hours. Human remains are processed as IATA HUM. Given the 24-hour burial requirement, we choose the fastest flight even at higher cost. The zinc coffin is sealed in Minsk, placed in a wooden crate with HUM marking in Arabic and English.

Reception at Cairo airport (CAI) is organized by our partner in Cairo in coordination with the Russian Embassy in Egypt (Belarus has an embassy in Cairo, Zamalek Street, assisting in emergencies). Customs formalities 2–6 hours — Egypt has a streamlined procedure for HUM cargo considering sharia. After release the body is delivered to a mosque for the janazah prayer, then to the cemetery for burial. Delivery is possible to any Egyptian governorate: Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Luxor, Aswan, Port Said, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh. Muslim burial without a coffin — the body is placed in a shroud (kafan) and buried facing Mecca.

Frequently asked questions

Where in Egypt do you deliver?

The main point is Cairo International Airport (CAI). We also accept in Alexandria (HBE), Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) airports. After customs clearance we deliver the body to a mosque for the janazah prayer and then to the cemetery in any Egyptian governorate: Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Port Said, Suez, Ismailia, Damanhur, Tanta, Mansoura, Asyut. We coordinate with imams and the Egyptian family to meet all sharia requirements.

What documents are required for repatriation to Egypt?

In Belarus: medical death certificate from the State Forensic Committee, ZAGS certificate, sanitary permit, embalming act, zinc coffin sealing certificate, Belarus MFA apostille. Since Egypt is not a Hague Convention member, consular legalization is required through the Egyptian Embassy (located in Minsk on Kuybyshev Street and in Moscow). Translations into Arabic and English. For Muslim funerals — a certificate from the imam of the deceased's faith.

How long does delivery to Cairo take given the 24-hour rule?

The sharia rule of burial within 24 hours in international repatriation is practically unfeasible due to document processing. Usually burial can be arranged within 48–72 hours. Express procedure: we start work immediately after the call, process the ZAGS certificate at night, on the first business day — apostille and consular legalization (with urgency fee). Embalming and coffin sealing — 6 hours. MSQ-CAI flight via Istanbul — 8–12 hours. Cairo customs — 2–6 hours.

How much does repatriation from Belarus to Egypt cost?

The cost depends on airline (EgyptAir, Turkish, Emirates, Qatar) and urgency. Base price includes: embalming, zinc coffin with sealing, wooden crate, Belarus MFA apostille, Egypt consular legalization, HUM airline ticket from MSQ, transit fees, CAI meeting, customs, delivery to mosque and cemetery. For Muslim funerals per sharia the priority is speed, not economy. Exact amount fixed in a contract. No hidden charges.

Is a zinc coffin mandatory for Egypt?

Yes, a sealed zinc coffin is mandatory under IATA HUM international transport standards and Egyptian sanitary rules. However, Muslim tradition buries the body without a coffin — only in a shroud (kafan) facing Mecca. Therefore, in Cairo before burial the zinc coffin is opened at the mosque or cemetery morgue, the body is washed (ghusl), wrapped in shroud and transferred to the cemetery. The Belarusian sealing certificate is recognized by all transit countries and Egyptian sanitary services.

How to obtain an apostille in Belarus for Egypt?

The apostille is issued by the Belarus MFA at 19 Lenin Street, Minsk. Originals of ZAGS certificate, medical certificate, sanitary permit, embalming act are submitted. Standard 2 business days, expedited — 1 day. Since Egypt is not a Hague Convention member, apostille alone is insufficient — consular legalization at the Egyptian Embassy (in Minsk on Kuybyshev Street or in Moscow) is required afterwards. We handle the entire procedure on priority mode for sharia compliance.

Can the body be accompanied to Cairo?

Yes, accompaniment is possible and traditional for Muslim funerals. A relative buys a regular passenger ticket on the same flight. Belarusian citizens obtain an Egypt Visa on Arrival for 25 USD for 30 days at Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh airports; online e-Visa is also available. Transit visas via Istanbul, Dubai or Doha are usually not required. Accompaniment is important for participation in janazah and burial rites.

What about visas for Belarusian relatives?

Belarusian citizens obtain an Egypt visa three ways: Visa on Arrival at the airport for 25 USD for 30 days (easiest); online e-Visa for 25 USD with 5–7 day processing; full visa at the Egyptian Embassy in Minsk on Kuybyshev Street or in Moscow. A 30-day visa is sufficient for a funeral trip. Children under 16 — on parent's passport record. We provide an invitation from the Egyptian partner to simplify the procedure, especially for urgent Muslim funerals.

Do you work during Ramadan and Eid al-Adha?

Yes, our dispatcher ‎+375 29 314-59-59 operates 24/7 all 365 days a year, including Belarusian holidays (January 1 and 7, March 8, May 1 and 9, July 3, November 7, December 25) and Islamic — Ramadan (month of fasting), Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Mawlid an-Nabi. In Egypt Muslim funerals are conducted even on holidays per sharia. We coordinate with imams and cemetery administrations, ensuring the earliest burial observing religious requirements.

What if documents are not ready on the day of death?

For Muslim funerals every hour is critical. Call ‎+375 29 314-59-59 immediately. We collect the body in Minsk or a Belarusian region, begin ritual washing per Islamic tradition, place it in morgue. In parallel our lawyers arrange the full package in express mode: ZAGS certificate (possibly on day of death), medical conclusion, sanitary permit, Belarus MFA apostille (in 1 day), Egypt consular legalization (in 1 day). The family provides the deceased's passport and Egypt contact.
