Repatriation from Minsk to Kathmandu: documents, transit, Hindu tradition

Nepal, the Himalayan country, is where Hindu and Buddhist traditions prescribe cremation of the deceased on native soil, preferably on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River at the Pashupatinath temple complex. We are approached by families of Nepalese medical students in Minsk, Vitebsk and Gomel; migrant workers employed at Belarusian construction sites and in agriculture; and mixed families where the deceased requested cremation in the homeland. Repatriation from Minsk to Kathmandu is a complex but regular route. We deliver the body from Minsk-2 airport (MSQ) to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in compliance with all Hindu traditions, sanitary standards and Nepalese authority requirements. 24/7 family support.

Documents in Belarus: medical death certificate from the State Committee of Forensic Examinations, ZAGS certificate, sanitary-epidemiological service export permit, embalming act and zinc coffin sealing certificate. All documents are apostilled at the Belarus MFA. Nepal has not acceded to the Hague Convention, so after apostille, consular legalization is required through the Nepalese Embassy — nearest in Moscow. Translations into English and Nepali are performed by a sworn translator. For Hindus, a caste certificate may also be prepared for ritual cremation. We handle the entire process.

Logistics from MSQ to Kathmandu (KTM) is built through major Persian Gulf hubs. The best option is Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH): flight from Minsk to Doha 5 hours, then direct Qatar Airways DOH-KTM 5 hours, total 12–16 hours with transit. Alternative — Emirates via Dubai (DXB) with direct DXB-KTM 4.5 hours. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (IST) also has direct IST-KTM flights. Human remains are processed as IATA HUM. Before departure from Minsk, we recommend notifying the Nepalese customs agency via our partner to expedite reception at KTM. Yellow fever vaccination is not required, but a certificate may be needed for transit through African hubs.

Reception at Tribhuvan Airport (KTM) is organized by our partner funeral agency in Kathmandu in coordination with the Russian Embassy in Nepal (Belarus does not have a separate embassy in Kathmandu — Belarusian citizens' interests are represented by the Russian consular department). Customs formalities 4–8 hours: verification of apostille, consular legalization, embalming certificate. After release the body is delivered to Pashupatinath temple for cremation on the sacred banks of the Bagmati (ghats), or to the family's province — Pokhara, Chitwan, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Biratnagar. For Buddhists, cremation is conducted at Boudhanath or Swayambhunath monasteries. We coordinate with local clergy.

Our dispatcher +375 29 314-59-59 answers calls 24/7, 365 days a year. Immediately upon request we collect the body in Minsk or any Belarusian region, place it in refrigerated morgue storage, begin embalming. Within two hours you receive a quote with a fixed price: all MSQ fees, zinc coffin, Belarus MFA apostille, consular legalization at Nepal Embassy in Moscow, HUM airline ticket, Doha or Dubai transit fees, KTM reception, customs, delivery to the temple or province. Price locked in a Russian-language contract. No hidden charges. We work during Dashain (October) and Tihar (November).

Frequently asked questions

Where in Nepal do you deliver?

The main point is Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. After customs clearance we deliver the body to Pashupatinath temple for traditional Hindu cremation on the banks of the Bagmati River, or to Boudhanath or Swayambhunath Buddhist monasteries. Delivery is possible to any Nepal province: Pokhara, Chitwan, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Biratnagar, Dharan, Butwal. For mountain region burials, special transport is used. Our partner coordinates with local clergy.

What documents are required for repatriation to Nepal?

In Belarus: medical death certificate from the State Forensic Committee, ZAGS certificate, sanitary permit, embalming act, zinc coffin sealing certificate, Belarus MFA apostille. Since Nepal is not a Hague Convention member, consular legalization is required through the Nepalese Embassy in Moscow. Translations into English and Nepali are done by a sworn translator. A religious affiliation certificate is useful for Hindu cremation. We arrange the entire package turnkey.

How long does delivery from Minsk to Kathmandu take?

Full cycle 5–8 business days. Document preparation and Belarus MFA apostille — 2–3 days. Consular legalization at Nepal Embassy in Moscow — 1–2 days. Embalming and coffin sealing — 1 day. Flight from MSQ via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul to KTM — 12–18 hours with transit. Customs clearance in Kathmandu — 4–8 hours. Expedited delivery with courier document processing is possible in 3–4 days.

How much does repatriation from Belarus to Nepal cost?

The cost is individual and depends on airline (Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines) and season. The base price includes: embalming, zinc coffin with sealing, wooden crate, Belarus MFA apostille, Nepal consular legalization, HUM airline ticket from MSQ, Doha/Dubai transit fees, KTM reception, customs clearance, delivery to Pashupatinath temple or any region. Exact amount fixed in a contract. No hidden surcharges — the price does not change.

Is a zinc coffin mandatory for Nepal?

Yes, a sealed zinc coffin is mandatory under IATA standards for long international flights and under Nepal sanitary import rules. The coffin is made and sealed in Minsk, placed in a wooden transport crate with HUM marking in English, cargo passport and sanitary certificate. The Belarusian sealing certificate is recognized by all transit countries — Qatar, UAE, Turkey — and Nepalese sanitary services. Before Hindu cremation the coffin is opened at Pashupatinath temple.

How to obtain an apostille in Belarus for Nepal?

The apostille is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, 19 Lenin Street, Minsk. Originals of the ZAGS certificate, medical certificate, sanitary permit and embalming act are submitted. Standard 2 business days, expedited — 1 day. Since Nepal is not a Hague Convention member, apostille alone is insufficient — consular legalization at the Nepalese Embassy (nearest in Moscow) is required afterwards. We handle the entire procedure including courier delivery to Moscow.

Can the body be accompanied to Kathmandu?

Yes, accompaniment is possible and important for Hindu families. A relative buys a regular passenger ticket on the same flight as the HUM cargo. Belarusian citizens can obtain a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan airport (Visa on Arrival) for 30 USD for 15 days or 50 USD for 30 days; online visa is also available. Transit visas via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul are usually not required when staying in the airport for less than 24 hours. We prepare all travel documents.

What about visas for Belarusian relatives?

Belarusian citizens obtain a Nepal visa in three ways: Visa on Arrival at Kathmandu airport for 30 USD (15 days) or 50 USD (30 days); online visa on the Nepal Immigration website in 24 hours; full visa at the Nepalese Embassy in Moscow for long stays. A 15-day visa is sufficient for a funeral trip. Children under 10 can obtain a visa free of charge. We provide an invitation from the local funeral partner to expedite border crossing.

Do you work on Belarusian and Nepalese holidays?

Yes, dispatcher +375 29 314-59-59 operates 24/7 all 365 days, including Belarusian January 1 and 7, March 8, May 1 and 9, July 3, November 7, December 25 and Nepalese Dashain (October, 15 days), Tihar (November), Holi (March), Nepali New Year (April). Body collection in Minsk and region — at any time. Apostille and Nepalese Embassy do not work on holidays, but body preparation, coffin sealing and MSQ flight booking continue non-stop.

What if documents are not ready on the day of death?

This is a typical situation. Call +375 29 314-59-59 immediately upon death. We collect the body in Minsk or a Belarusian region, ensure refrigerated morgue storage, begin embalming. In parallel our lawyers arrange the full package: ZAGS certificate, medical conclusion, sanitary permit, Belarus MFA apostille, Nepal Embassy consular legalization. The family needs to provide the deceased's passport and a Nepal contact. Everything else is our turnkey work.
