Full-cycle Cargo 200 transport from Minsk to cities in the PRC

Repatriation of a deceased person from Belarus to China is a complex international procedure that requires coordinated action by Belarusian state agencies, Chinese consular services and air carriers. We support the families of Chinese citizens who passed away in Minsk, Brest, Gomel, Vitebsk, Mogilev and Grodno, as well as Belarusians and Russians who worked or studied within the China-Belarus Industrial Park Great Stone project and whose relatives ask us to deliver ashes or a body to the PRC. Our office works 24/7 including Chinese public holidays. The initial consultation at +375 29 314-59-59 is free of charge; the operator speaks Russian and English, and we connect a Chinese translator when needed. We handle medical certificates, embalming, the zinc container, packaging, apostille, translation of documents, cargo booking and liaison with the receiving funeral service in China.

Paperwork begins at a Belarusian ZAGS registry office, which issues the official death certificate. In parallel, the State Forensic Examinations Committee prepares a medical cause-of-death report and a certificate confirming the absence of quarantine infections. The sanitary-epidemiological service issues permission for international transportation of remains, while the funeral home certifies the hermetic sealing of the zinc coffin. Since both Belarus and China are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention (the PRC acceded in November 2023), documents are legalised through a simplified procedure — an apostille from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, without additional consular legalisation. This shortens the preparation timeline by 4–7 working days compared with the old procedure. All papers are translated into Chinese by a certified translator and notarised.

The main route is a flight from Minsk National Airport (MSQ). There are no direct flights from Minsk to China, so we use connections via major hubs. Turkish Airlines operates via Istanbul to Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (PVG), Guangzhou (CAN) and Shenzhen (SZX); Qatar Airways connects via Doha; Emirates flies via Dubai. The final leg is often operated by China Southern, Air China or Cathay Pacific. During booking we coordinate the Cargo 200 shipment with both airlines, as each carrier has its own rules for accepting a zinc container. We verify packaging dimensions, weight and available space in the cargo hold of a Boeing 777F or Airbus A330. At departure we issue a NOTOC notification and an AWB cargo waybill marked Human Remains.

In China, the body is received by a licensed funeral service with whom we coordinate in advance. The Russian Embassy in Beijing at 东直门北中街4号 and the consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenyang assist with matters involving Russian citizens. For Chinese nationals we liaise with the local Civil Affairs Bureau 民政局 and public security authorities. Please note that most provinces of mainland China require mandatory cremation; exceptions apply only to Muslim minorities such as the Hui and Uyghur peoples, who maintain traditional cemeteries. If the family initially plans a full-coffin burial, possible regions are limited to Xinjiang, Ningxia and parts of Qinghai. Otherwise we recommend cremation in Minsk followed by transport of an urn — it is cheaper, faster and fully compliant with Chinese law.

The cost depends on the destination city, the selected airline, whether embalming is needed and whether an accompanying person travels. The typical range is from 5,200 to 9,500 US dollars for the full cycle, including documents, coffin, ground transport, air freight and reception in China. Transporting an urn with ashes costs 2–3 times less and takes 3–5 working days. We account for risks associated with long Chinese holidays: Spring Festival 春节 (January–February), National Day 国庆节 (1–7 October) and Qingming 清明节 (early April) — during these periods state agencies and funeral bureaus in the PRC operate on reduced hours, so timelines may extend by 5–10 days. Payment is accepted by bank transfer, card or cash; we provide a full set of closing documents for insurance companies and employers.

Frequently asked questions

Is cremation required before sending a body to China?

Cremation is not legally mandatory for international transport under Belarusian or Chinese law, but it greatly simplifies the process. An urn is easier to clear through customs, cheaper to transport and can be received in any province of the PRC. Moreover, most regions of mainland China require cremation after arrival anyway, so we usually recommend performing it in Minsk. This saves the family around 3,000–4,000 US dollars and roughly one week of time overall.

How quickly can Cargo 200 be dispatched from Minsk to Beijing?

With a complete document package and no Chinese holiday overlap, a body can depart 7 to 12 days after death. An urn with ashes is shipped much faster — within 3 to 5 working days, including cremation in Minsk, obtaining the MFA apostille and booking cargo space on a flight. If the death falls during Spring Festival or National Day, add 5–10 days: Chinese agencies operate on reduced hours during these periods, and cargo flights are heavily overbooked out of major hubs.

What documents are required for shipment to the PRC?

The basic package includes the official ZAGS death certificate, a medical report from the State Forensic Examinations Committee, a certificate confirming the absence of quarantine infections, a sanitary permit, a zinc-coffin sealing act, the passport of the deceased and a relatives application. Since November 2023 documents are certified by an MFA Belarus apostille without consular legalisation, as China has joined the Hague Convention. All papers are translated into Chinese by a certified translator and duly notarised.

Can a Muslim body be sent without cremation?

Yes, it is possible to deliver a body to Muslim-majority regions such as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and parts of Qinghai and Gansu. These provinces have traditional Muslim cemeteries and burial rites in accordance with Islamic customs. We coordinate in advance with the local Civil Affairs Bureau 民政局 and the imam of the receiving mosque, prepare a cover letter in Chinese and Arabic, and arrange reception at Urumqi or Lanzhou airport with minimal storage time.

Which airlines carry Cargo 200 from Minsk to China?

Most often we book Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha or Emirates via Dubai — all three connect to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The final leg is operated by Chinese carriers: China Southern, Air China, Hainan Airlines and sometimes Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong. The final choice depends on the destination city, the tariff, the availability of cargo-hold space for the coming week and the agreement of both airlines to accept a zinc container.

How much does repatriation from Belarus to China cost?

Full body repatriation in a zinc coffin costs 5,200 to 9,500 US dollars depending on the destination, airline, embalming requirements and accompanying person. Flights to Beijing and Shanghai are cheaper thanks to regular service; Urumqi and Kunming are more expensive due to double connections. Transport of an urn with ashes ranges from 1,800 to 3,200 US dollars and includes cremation, documents, apostille, translation, packaging and the air ticket. The final quote is confirmed after the route and departure date are agreed.

What if a Chinese citizen dies at the Great Stone construction site?

Since 2014 we have assisted resident companies of the China-Belarus Industrial Park 中白工业园 with repatriation of employees. When a PRC citizen passes away, we notify the Chinese embassy in Minsk, obtain employer confirmation and coordinate the receiving party in the deceased home province. The employer typically covers expenses under the labour contract and insurance policy. We prepare the full documentation package, including a bilingual English-Chinese death report, and escort the shipment to Beijing or Shanghai.

Do you work during Spring Festival?

Yes, our hotline +375 29 314-59-59 operates 24/7, 365 days a year, including Belarusian, Russian and Chinese public holidays. However, please note that during 春节 (late January to mid February) government offices, funeral bureaus and many cargo services in China close for 7–15 days. We can dispatch the shipment from Minsk, but reception in the PRC may be delayed until holidays are over. During these periods we recommend sending an urn with ashes rather than a full body.

Can a relative accompany the coffin on the flight to China?

Yes, accompaniment is permitted. A relative or company representative flies on the same plane in the passenger cabin while the zinc coffin is carried in the cargo hold as Human Remains. We help to obtain a Chinese L or M category visa, book economy or business-class tickets, meet the passenger at the transit airport (Istanbul, Doha, Dubai) and at arrival. When layovers exceed 8 hours we arrange a hotel and transport to the funeral home and Civil Affairs Bureau 民政局.

Where can relatives seek help in Beijing or Shanghai?

Russian and Belarusian nationals can turn to the Russian Embassy in Beijing at 东直门北中街4号 and the consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang and Hong Kong. These missions certify powers of attorney, assist with notaries and issue death documents for Russian citizens. We share direct contacts of the consular section, duty officer numbers and the addresses of local funeral homes 殡仪馆 in the destination city. When necessary we provide a Chinese-speaking interpreter to accompany the family to the cemetery and crematorium.
